Crystals and Jewelry Q&A

This question is thanks to a friend who saw last week's poll question and wanted to know right then what gold filled is!

QUESTION: "What is gold filled anyway?"

MY ANSWER: "Contrary to popular belief, gold filled is not something filled with gold. It's exactly the opposite. It's gold filled with base metal. A tube of 14 karat (or other karat) gold is permanently bonded to a inner core of base metal, usually copper. By law, gold filled has to be at least 1/20th of the weight of the finished metal, so gold filled has a lot more gold than gold plate which only has to be a few microns thick. Because the whole outside of the metal is 14 karat gold, everything you see and that touches your skin in gold filled jewelry is actually 14 karat gold. So gold filled works well for many people with sensitive skin! Gold filled is much sturdier than gold plate and doesn't tend to flake and peel and it's tarnish resistant. So it's a great economical alternative to the price of solid gold or the short-lived gold plate."

Fun Poll Results

This past week's poll was about the question I mentioned above, "What is gold filled?" Most people (46%) said that it's base metal filled with gold, which we now know isn't the case. 31% said that it's a thin gold plating on base metal, which isn't quite right either. 15% got it right with the answer Karat Gold over Base Metal. Kudos to you folks! And 8% said none of the above. I can see I wasn't doing a good job telling folks what gold filled is. I'll keep working on that!

QUESTION: "What is vermeil and how do you say it?"

MY ANSWER: "Vermeil is sterling silver that is coated with heavy 22k or 24k gold electroplate that is used in jewelry making. It is used as an economical alternative to solid gold. After all, a 24k gold piece of jewelry would not only be soft since pure gold is soft, it would also be pretty darned costly. As for how you say it, I've heard it said all kinds of ways. The correct way to say it from what I've been able to determine from research is 'ver-MAY' since it's originally a French term. I hope that helps!"

Fun Poll Results

This past week's poll question was "What is a parure?" Most folks already knew, since 65% gave the technically correct answer "Matched Set of Jewelry." 6% said French jewelry which is sort of correct, as the word parure is French so it originated with French jewelry. 18% said it was an exotic mineral and 12% says it was none of the choices. No one believed it was an exotic parrot or a native of Paris. You folks know more about jewelry than most!

QUESTION: "I have three pieces of what is labelled as Peacock Ore, beautiful stone like coal, but with the brilliant irridescent blues and greens and purples of peacock feathers. Can you tell me anything about it?"

MY ANSWER: "That would be chalcopyrite, which is known as Peacock Ore or Peacock Rock. It also comes with golden and green looking sparkly iridescence too, but that's not seen
as often as the blues and pinks and greens."

This week's fun poll question was, "What type of quartz crystals do you prefer?" The overhwelming answer was Brazil, at 71%. Arkansas, China, and Madagascar didn't rate with 0% each. That was a bit of a shocker to me. "Other" got the rest of the botes at 29%. Now I'm dying of curiosity. What are these "other" crystals? I just got this one in today, but it was a good question that several have asked over the years, so I thought I'd get it right out to you!

QUESTION: "Why, do some pendants point up and some point down? Does it make a significant difference? What does that do to the energy to the person wearing it?"

MY ANSWER: "With my jewelry, some pendants have crystals that point up and others point down for one of two reasons. The most mundane reason is that it just looks better one way or another; I'm usually a bit more energetically inclined though! Crystals pointing up in pendants tend to pull energy into the upper chakras. Crystals pointing down in pendants tend to pull energy into the lower chakras. So the use or need of the person the jewelry is for determines which direction the crystal points. The energy of the person wearing it would be affected by whether the upper or lower chakras were stimulated. I hope that helps!"

Phew! What a weekend. I spent my weekend and the last couple days of the week, with a lot of Mr Volunteer Man's help, setting up a whole new shopping cart at CrystalsAndJewelry.com. Why? Well it certainly wasn't because I'm so fond of coding! The old shopping cart system had gotten senile or something, and just wasn't doing the job. So I had to get rid of it and get a new cart. MY ANSWER: "Black tourmaline is my top pick for protection of most any kind. It's strong energy is good protection, and it also transmutes negative enregy to positive energy. Witches Fingers would also be good for protection from spirit attachments. I have to say, though, that my experience with spirits has shown me that the best way to protect from them is with personal shielding and flat out telling them to leave you alone. Simple, but backed with the power of your will, it can be highly effective."

QUESTION: "Have you hear of a gemstone called Blackstone? I've been looking thru Melody and other sources, but I'm not finding the name. I think it is either an agate or possibly an onyx."

MY ANSWER: "Good question. Yes, I've heard of Blackstone, but what I know about it you could put in a thimble. I've read that it is crushed and reconstituted black onyx, or black obsidian. I've also read that it's black agate, or just a black rock, kind of like a river rock. So... depending on what kind you have in hand, the metaphysical properties would vary. Since it's black, though, it should be good for grounding and survival issues."

It seems that a number of folks kind of turn up their noses at art glass in jewelry because it's not natural. That's really too bad because there is some stunningly gorgeous stuff out there as far as art glass. It can really be a striking addition to jewelry. Yes, it's Saturday night for this week's newsletter instead of Friday night. That's because it was a busy and good week for me and Mr Volunteer Man. I was gone in the early part of the week on a weekend trip with Grandma Cat and Brother Cat. We all had a great time! Blue Chalcedony, Hurricanes, and Stuff

First off, thank you all for the prayers and positive energy for Mr Volunteer Man's family in Florida this past week. They all got through Hurricane Frances safe and sound. Yay! Crystals and Jewelry Q&A

QUESTION: I saw a beautiful figure of Quan Yin in a local store and I'm not sure of the material she was made from. The store owner told me the material is amberlin (a mixture of amber and resin). Have you ever heard of it and if there is such a thing, does mixing the amber with resin take away it's metaphysical properties?

MY ANSWER: Amberlin (or other trade names of amber and resin) is used a lot more than most know, because unscrupulous dealers just call it amber. Bah on that! It's good that your local store owner is being honest! My experience is that it's not a problem as far as metaphysical properties when amber is mixed with resin. This may be because it's normally mixed with copal resin, which is really just younger amber. Even if it's mixed with plastic, I've not seen it be a problem per se -- it's just got a bit less boost to
the amber energy sometimes since there's not as much of it there. I'm sure some folks would disagree, but that's my experience of it.

QUESTION: "We found a small shop that had stones and crystals and we found a nice-sized piece of > > something called "silicon". It was simply beautiful so we bought it. We happily carted it home and I proceeded to look it up in all my crystal books.... but it wasn't listed anywhere. Then I went to the Web and wasn't satisfied with what I read. So....... Can you enlighten us as to silicon???? What are the metaphysical properties associated with this stone/mineral? Does it have any?"

MY ANSWER: Isn't silicon gorgeous??? I love it myself. I have a cabochon of it here that I'll sooner or later get around to turning it into a piece of jewelry. The down side is that it's man-made. It's the same stuff that bits of your computer chips are made of. hehehe Having my bent of mind (very bendy at times LOL), I think everything that exists has some sort of metaphysical properties, because everything has energy or it wouldn't exist, and it's the energy that gives it the properties. My take on the silicon is that it has properties of enhanced communication, agility of thought, and grace. Am I right? Who knows! It's still great stuff, though :)

Thank you all for the positive energy and prayers for Chuck's parents. They made it to Florida safely. However, they also made it just in time for Hurricane Frances to start looming on the horizon. Eeek! After Hurricane Isabel last year in Virginia (which they are STILL cleaning up from in places), I have a hefty respect for these storms. Chuck's parents and his kids and grandkids are all in Florida, along with a ton of people we don't know but who sure don't deserve to be blown or washed away. So let's all send positive energy and prayers for the folks in the storm's path. It's definitely on my healing / prayer list, at any rate!

QUESTION: Is blue goldstone synthetic or natural?

MY ANSWER: All of the colors of goldstone are man-created. Originally the traditional orange-gold goldstone was a secret formulation of glass embedded with copper flecks that was known and done only by French monks. The secret was lost for centuries, and it's only fairly recently that a way of making goldstone was discovered again. Since then, they've started making goldstone in blue, green, and other colors as well as the traditional orange-gold color.

I hope you've had a good week. I went to my first County Fair this week. Woo hoo! It was fun :) I've been to State Fairs before, but never a County Fair for some reason. I don't even really know if they had them where I lived in Virginia before. But Chenango County here has a good little one. QUESTION: I have been wanting to find some crystals to put at the four courners of my daughters lot. She just bought the house and I wanted to secure the energy for her. She has anxiety, and is realy very sencitive...Do you think the witches fingers are good?

A: It's funny, but as I was reading along I immediately thought of the witches fingers before I even got to the question about it. So, yes, I think witches fingers would be good. I also use clear quartz and salt, along with white sage at the four corners of a property, for protection and keeping the area clear energetically. Just don't use too much salt in one spot, as it can poison the land if you do. I just take a pinch and place it at each corner. Another thing I do is ask the trees, bushes, grass, rocks, or whatever it is that surrounds the house to help with the protective energy. I've been known to do it by walking about in the yard and asking out loud, or sitting nearby and doing it in prayer or meditation. Either way seems to do just as well.

Hiya!

No hot fudge sunday for dinner this week. But all was not lost. Chuck's grandmother, who's ohhhhhhhh 93ish, decided she wanted fresh wild blueberries this week. So never minding that her walker wouldn't fit too well in with the wild blueberries, she abandoned the walker and picked them anyway. So of course, Chuck's mother had to make blueberry pie. Yum! I'd never had wild blueberry pie, but now I'm hooked. Just what I needed, another dessert to love. hehehe

A while back, I said I'd "introduce" you to Beth, Mr. Volunteer Man's daughter who also makes jewelry. Q: I am considering buying a watch with several different gemstones on it. The gemstones are set in silver though. So if the gemstones aren't physically touching the skin are they still just as effective, or is that important that they come in contact with your skin?

A: My experience and understanding is that wearing the stones or carrying them is the trick. If you have them on your person somehow, they can interact with your personal aura. Some people do feel that they must touch the skin, but that seems contrary to the whole idea of personal energy and aura to me. So if it were me, I'd get the watch and I'm sure the stones' energy would get to me.

QUESTION: Does chinese river rock have any metaphysical properties?

MY ANSWER: Because everything has energy of some sort, everything must have metaphysical properties of some kind, including Chinese River Rock. My experience and intuition with the Chinese River Rock is that they bring a combination of earth and water energies, are very helpful grounding the emotions, give a sense of safety in the vastness of the world, and are calming. As far as crystal healing goes, I would use them for anxiety, panick attacks, and stress-related illness. I hope that helps!

Here's a simple stress relief tip that a friend showed me. Take a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. (Yes, those things!) Draw a line of lower case i's on the paper WITHOUT dotting them at first. Then go back and dot the i's so that the dot just barely touches the top of each i. Then draw waves below the row of i's. Done! Try it. Don't you feel better afterwards? Dotting the i's so carefully focuses you and shuts out all the mental garbage we have going on when we're stressed. The waves then give you a calmer stress-relieving internal rhythm. This is a great little trick you can do anywhere.

Hi there!

Chuck said to tell everyone thanks for taking part in his sale, and thinks for your support. It looks like everyone had a ball while I was gone! I'm glad to hear it :) I had a good time on my buying trip and got beads and goodies that you'll see turned into jewelry before too long. I also had fun getting to see Grandma Cat (my Mom) and the kitties. Mini the Cat has finally truly gotten over being skinny -- she's a plump gal now. Yay! I mentioned on the news page of the site that I DID get healing requests while I was out of town. Chuck was kind enough to read them off to me. QUESTION: "I got some "Lithium points". Any thoughts on that?"

MY ANSWER: "Lithium points are most likely quartz (or some other crystal) with lithium embedded. Unless you spent a huge fortune on them. LOL Lithium is almost never found by itself, so it would be exceedingly rare to find pure lithium. Lepidolite and kunzite are the stones most often seen that have a high content of lithium in them. Even quartz point with lithium embedded is rare, though, so I'm sure they're treasures regardless."

Q: Can you write something about Reiki on your weekly newsletter? Like, for me I am not sure how they connected. How is a layout done? How do you put the stones arond yourself?

A: What a topic! I can't possibly go over all the possibilities here. As I'm sure you know, Reiki is Universal Life Force Energy. A Reiki layout with crystals can be as simple or as complex as you feel moved to make. Many traditional layouts are done by choosing cleared crystals or stones that are used to help with general healing or the issues at hand, and placing 6 of them around the body of the healee. To focus energy in to the healee, point them in towards the body. To bring out disease or negative energy, point them away from the body. Once the stones are placed, simply proceed with the Reiki treatment as usual. This can be done on others or yourself. An extremely simple form of using Reiki and crystals is to simply place any stone or stones on the healee or have them hold the crystals in their hands, while receiving a Reiki treatment. Pricing is the #1 problem home jewelers have after they make their wire jewelry. I could probably make a good living buying handcrafted jewelry on a newbie's website and reselling them somewhere else. And even after years of making jewelry I see many people overpricing their jewelry but, most of all, underpricing their jewelry.

Many times home jewelers underprice their wire jewelry in an effort to sell more. But that method doesn't work well because many of your customers will relate value to price. So, if you say it's only $20, then it must be worth only $20 and, in reality, it could be worth much more. You will always sell more jewelry by overpricing it rather than underpricing it. And, yes, you can tell them Preston said that!

EXAMPLES of PRICING

***I know that a smoky quartz gemstone, nicely cut, will retail in a wire setting for about $1.25 to $1.50 per carat. So whether I paid 10 cents a carat or 50 cents a carat, my retail price will be $1.50 per carat. Now with this in mind if I make a pendant from a 20 carat smoky quartz in a nice border wrap or sculpted wire setting, I have a formula for pricing this pendant. I use a set price for a pendant setting, rather than use the price of gold wire for a retail price formula. Let's say I bought the smoky quartz for 50 cents a carat----- My formula would look something like this.

20 carat smoky quartz x $1.50 =$30
pendant setting =$45
total price =$75

This is a targeted bread and butter price for this type of gemstone wire pendant setting. You could charge more and might charge less if the customer bought several pieces--------But this price is very test marketed for a gold-filled wire pendant of good quality. That means a nice stone with good color, absolutely no chips, in a well crafted wire pendant setting with nicely constructed bail.

Let's look at this formula closely because you will make the most money from using this formula.

cost of stone--------------------------$10

cost of wire----------------------------$5

Total hard cost------------------------$15

Selling price $75---------------------

500% profit!!!

Yor also need special pricing formulas for a very special piece of wire jewelry. A price must be placed on the creative aspect of the item. Polishing and cleaning your wire jewelry

The term polish means to make brighter, to make glossy. Cleaning is not polishing and visa versa. Do not neglect polishing and cleaning your wire jewelry properly. If you do not do this, your jewelry is uncompleted.

Let's look at some simple techniques for polishing your wire jewelry.

#1---Hand polishing

This is a very simple method of using a cloth which could be an old cotton T-shirt with a dab of red rouge. If you are running the wire through a polishing cloth with red rouge on it before building your project, you can get a pretty good glow to your gold or silver. But you should also rub your finished project briskly with the same cloth after it is completed. This method will work out fine and does not require any expensive equipment.

#2---Rotary tool polishing

This is a very professional way to polish your jewelry and the cost is really not too expensive depending on what equipment you purchase. Usually a good rotary tool with 10,000 rpms or more costs about $49 or so. Usually the wider the buffing pad, the less problem you will have with the wire getting caught in the jewelry wires. Use a soft buffing wheel about the size of a quarter. Remember at 10,000 rpms, you're going to have red rouge flying everywhere so make sure it's in a place where you won't ruin the new drapes. And you should use a simple nose mask to keep from inhaling all that stuff. It is toxic if you breath enough of it so take precautions and you will have nothing to worry about.

Setting up your jewelers bench.

Before you set up your jewelers bench, please give it some thought. Are you distracted by children? Do you like to work alone? Do you have a convenient electrical outlet? How's your lighting? Do you mind being disturbed by the telephone? All these things should be considered before you set up your work station.

If you asked me what the most important piece of furniture is in my house, I would tell you that it is my jeweler's bench. I have seen professional jewelers benches cost $500, $1,000 and even $2,000. Well, unless you're the retired CEO of Yahoo, forget it! This is a game. It's a game of business. If you can't win this game of setting up your shop on a shoestring, you will never be successful in your own business in the long run. Remember this is a HOME BUSINESS and when you're paying all the bills, you do things just a little bit differently than when the boss is paying them.

My bench is an old desk I got from goodwill for $25. It's
5 ft. wide and 3 ft. deep, has three drawers on the right and a hidden compartment in the rear. (I keep 14kt gold wire and findings in that compartment). It has 3 drawers on the left and a pull out shelf at the top where I place the wire of my current project. When the project is finished, I put the shelf back in. I have a center drawer just for sweepings and scrap wire. When it gets filled, I place the scraps in a cardboard box for storage and then recycle them at the refinery. The desk is solid wood and all the drawers are glued and dovetailed. It is 60 year old office desk that is a work of old world craftsmanship.

I have a small vise bolted to one corner of the desk---as you are sitting at the desk, the left hand side is a better position for the vise if you're right-handed. If you are not, the reverse would be used. This vise is used for holding long strands of wire for twisting or manipulating or whatever. I bought the vise brand new for about $10.00.

There is a metal shop organizer with about 50 small plastic drawers for fittings, snap sets, pearls, gemstones, cabochons, etc. I also have several adjustable plastic finding trays with about 15 compartments. These can be bought at a craft supply store or jewelry supply store. They will cost anywhere from $1 to $4. In these I keep free-form cabochons, intarsia pieces, mabe pearls, crystals, cameos, glass cabochons and other doodads.

I have two arm lamps--one on the right and one on the left for extra lighting and, yes, you will need it. Both are clip ons. One is an old jewelers lamp and was purchased at a flea market for $10. The other is made in Taiwan light fixture and was bought at a department store for about $12. The old jewelers lamp uses halogen light bulbs and produces great light! By the way, halogen reproduces daylight. The other arm lamp uses a clear light bulbs---it seems to work better.

On the top of the desk I have laid a layer of white Naugahyde on a small work area about 2 ft. by 2 ft. Why? Because it forms a nice cushioned surface so if I drop a customer's gemstone, the gemstone won't break or crack. It also helps with lighting and makes it easier to find parts and findings. NOW if you plan to work with a torch, I would not suggest this.

You're gonna need a chair and it should be a very comfortable one because if you're successful and I'm betting you're gonna be, you're going to be spending lots of time in it. The new office type chairs with roller wheels, etc., are very expensive---$100-$400. And they are not built very well. (At 265 lbs I am just about an expert at chairs.) Go to a used office furniture store, flea market, or whatever, and get an old, well-built office chair with roller wheels and arm rests. Try one made from wood with old world craftsmanship. You'll be glad that you did! I paid $30 for mine.

On the floor I have a black rubber mat, a large one that covers the floor of my work area around my bench. Why? Because carpet will make wire stand up and if you walk in your work area barefoot like I do, you might get a piece of wire in your foot. Plus, again, if I drop something fragile like a gemstone, cameo, or whatever, it won't break and you can find the item easily against the black background. I shopped around for the black mats at kitchen supply. WOW! Too much. Then I went to a beauty shop supplier. WOW! Too much. I finally found some reasonable black rubber matting at a hardware store that sold carpeting for about $25.

That's about all you need for a professional wire sculptors bench. Add up the cost and you can see it doesn't take much to set up your little workshop. Now, what's that you say---you don't have $100 to spend on this project----hey, no problem. I worked on my kitchen table for about a year before I got my bench together and I have seen some great jewelry made on kitchen tables!

Hiya!

I hope you had a good Independence Day weekend. We did. The fireworks were great! At one point we had two fireworks shows going on in different areas at the same time. And we could see both of them from the yard! The cookout was yummy too! If you're not in the US, I hope you had a great weekend regardless. And heck, you can celebrate any time too!

Home Jewelry Parties-----Make Cash and Customers

About ten years ago I was working a Christmas craft fair and a fellow wire artist visited my booth. As she entered, I asked her, How come youre not working the show? She replied, I just finished a home party and made over $2,000 so Im taking the evening off! She further explained she had over 10 home parties scheduled for the Christmas holidays. At that time I was not familiar with home parties but after hearing about her success with them I decided to jump in and give them a try.

The first thing I learned was that it was not hard to set one up. Many of your customers will actually offer to give one for you and invite their friends and thats just what I did at one of the shows.

What I loved about home parties is that they usually last for only about 2 hours and you have no competition. You have a totally captive audience. PLUS you have no booth fee. Your costs for the showing can be only a piece of jewelry to give to your host as a gift.

Another thing that I noticed was that you really make a special bond when you meet someone one-on-one at a party. This bond can create a loyal customer in the future.

Another plus is that, if you work craft or jewelry shows on the weekends, you can have your home parties during the week without interrupting your schedule.

There are lots of possibilities and you will learn a little more as you proceed. You might want to give a little talk about the jewelry biz at the show. You dont have to be an expert gemologist to do this because the average customer knows very little about the gem and jewelry trade. A few topics you could give a little talk on:

* Cleaning pearls
* Cleaning cameos
* The history of cameos
* The history of pearl farming
* Gemstone history and lore
* Gemstone therapy
* History of wire sculpture

Just let your imagine run away with you. BUT the big thing is to start right away! This is the best time in the world to give a small home party at your home or at a friends. You could even do it for a business, for example, say the girls that work at the bank on their lunch hour----the more employees, the better. Be creative. Dont be afraid. Make that appointment today!

Wire is the wire sculptor's medium of choice, so it's important to learn as much as you can about it.

Wire sculptors use a wide variety of wire in gold, silver, gold-filled, rose gold, red gold, and even copper and brass, but the two most important wires we use in this art are 14kt. Rolled Gold (gold-filled) or sterling silver. These wires are the bread and butter metal of the trade. The most popular jewelry is the jewelry made with gold or silver.

AND, yes, I know there are exceptions to this but just starting out you might work with what sells best for you. Follow your instincts and work with what you like. I have been through all the ups and downs that you're about to go through. So if you want to do this as a full-time or part-time business and be successful at what you're doing, you will eventually need to go to precious metals, such as gold-filled and sterling silver wire.

Now you may love to work with brass, copper, or whatever, but for your jewelry to sell consistently at jewelry store prices, it will usually have to be created in some kind of precious metal. You can start out with gold plate, brass, copper, and German silver (nickel) but eventually you should use gold-filled and sterling silver wire to make your jewelry.

14 kt solid gold is another good medium but because of cost and difficulty in working it, there is little room for mistakes. Plus it drives the price of even a small pendant so high it may be out of reach of the average jewelry purchaser.

Let me tell you my story... "You won't believe how it all got started"

Ten years ago I spent three months in a psychiatric hospital for a neurological condition (I'm a manic depressive). I lost my job, my family, and was financially devastated. There I was in a mental hospital with no future in sight. Believe me, there is not much demand in the work force for someone with mental illness. While in the hospital, I was asked to attend occupational therapy, which consisted of ceramics, art, and jewelry making.

I went to the class but refused to do anything. But as the hour passed I began to get a little bored and started making jewelry from some kind of plastic. To my surprise I found myself really enjoying it. It was really fun and relaxing and I really got a kick out of all the crazy designs I could come up with.

As the days turned into weeks, I wanted to go further in the jewelry making process. I bought tools, a torch and a jewelers saw and jumped in with both feet. I was going to be a silversmith or maybe even a goldsmith. Oh, yea, this was it. I finally found my niche.

Something I could do from my home with my illness and make a living my own home business.

The very second day I accidentally stuck the jewelers saw into one side of my hand and out the other! I'm not exaggerating here----- it was pretty ugly! Next, my shirt caught on fire from the torch (I forget that it's on --I have short term memory loss) and while trying to put the flames out, I threw the burning shirt outside and it went under my truck, right under the gas tank!!!! Almost blew my truck up and nearly caught my house on fire! At that point, I realized I had no skill in using specialized jewelers tools, torches, and other sophisticated equipment. It was one of the lowest times in my life!

Realizing I needed some training by real jewelers I sent a resume to 54 regional jewelry stores and offered to work in their shop for FREE 40 hours a week ---I would sweep, clean toilets, anything if they would just show me how to use the tools.

I will never ever forget it. Over 50 letters- "NOT ONE SHOP EVEN RESPONDED -- EVEN FOR FREE LABOUR"... I know what it means to be DOWN. It seemed that I would spend the rest of my life in mental institutions. No one would hire me for anything... not even without pay! A few days later I got a 2 day pass from the hospital and went to the French Quarter in New Orleans and was...

Introduced to a simple way of making jewelry from wire.

I watched a street vendor in the flea market making little rings from silver wire. I noticed he only used a few pair of pliers to make his jewelry. No torch. No saw. No expensive machinery. I also noticed he had about ten people waiting in line with money in hand. I said to myself: I can do this! I then bought every book and video I could get my hands on and started to practice, practice, practice----I went back to the psychiatric unit and started making jewelry from brass. Well, my designs wouldn't win any prizes at this time.

One day a nurse came to me and said How much do you want for that pair of earrings you just made? I said, Gee. I don't know. How about $5. ... she bought the earrings and wore them to the cafeteria. Ten minutes later another nurse came in and bought a pendant. Then another nurse and so on and so on.

By the end of the day every nurse in that hospital was wearing a pair of my hand-crafted earrings or some little wire pendant! I made over $200 right from my hospital bed just charging $5 and $7 each. It was then that I decided that this is what I wanted to do when I got out of the hospital and nothing was going to stop me.

After making wire jewelry and selling it on the road for more than 5 years in almost every city in America, I became quite well known for my wire sculpted jewelry and had quite a following. Even I was surprised at the reaction. I couldn't believe it. I could not keep up with the demand. And I might say everyone wanted me to teach them how to do it! But I wasn't ready and I was not about to show anyone what took me years to learn.

Tiny markets with revenues of about $300 a weekend led to small craft shows with revenues of about $1,000, then larger craft shows with revenues of over $2,000 a weekend, and finally gem and jewelry shows with revenues from $5,000 to $10,000 for a four day show.

I pioneered the whole method of wire sculpted jewelry in the U.S. and really paid my dues before I developed my complete DVD and video course on making wire jewelry. Today we have over 5000 home jewelers.
